Book Descriptions
for Remembering by Adriana M. Garcia and Xelena González
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Día de los Angelitos, a ritual of the Día de Muertos celebration, specifically honors deceased children or pets. In Remembering, a Latina girl and her family remember a beloved dog who has passed on. Lush acrylic paintings realistically portray the tender memories of a pet who offered love and companionship. As the family prepares an altar, the daughter collects special items—framed photographs, dishes of kibble and water, a chew stick, a walking harness, and a tennis ball. Candles, incense, and marigold flowers complete the ofrenda, offering a path home on a sacred night. Notes from the author and illustrator recount personal pet losses and the value of celebrating memories. Instructions for “Building Your Own Ofrenda” share additional details, alternatives, and considerations when celebrating Día de Muertos. (Ages 5-10)
