Book Description
for Our House by Pam Conrad and Brian Selznick
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Levittown, Pennsylvani was once a potato field, but in the aftermath of World War II, in the shining hope of new possibilty, houses grew, and a community was born. The houses looked almost identical on the outside, but inside were families as singular as the stories they have to tell. Pam Conrad explores our history and our sense of belonging with six funny, moving stories told in the voices of children living in Levittown in the six decades from 1940 to the present. Each one masterfully capture a sense of the times in which the children live, marking the changes from decade to decade in the social climate of our nation. But they are unified by a palpable sense of place which leaves a visible imprint on each child's life. (Ages 9-12)
