for See You Yesterday by Rachel Lynn Solomon
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
College freshman Barrett Bloom (white, Jewish) is starting the University of Washington intent on reinventing herself, or at least others’ perceptions of her. But her first day of class begins with the late arrival of a new roommate: Lucie Lamont, who was once Barrett’s friend but long ago left Barrett behind. In Intro to Physics, Barrett sits next to a guy who ends up embarrassing her in front of the class. Her interview to work for the campus paper starts out great, but she sees the moment the editor’s interest starts to wane. And Barrett’s spur-of-the-moment decision to attend a frat party ends in flames … literally. To her dismay, Barrett wakes up the next morning to discover it’s still the first day of class. Trapped in a time loop, she learns she isn’t alone. Miles (Japanese American/white, Jewish), the guy from Physics, is trapped, too. Miles is eager for Barrett to help him research the problem; eventually, however, she convinces Miles that they should live every day to the fullest. All the while, they share their pasts and their hopes and their fears, from Barrett’s loneliness and the sexist online abuse she endured at the end of high school to Miles’s worries about his older brother, Max, just out of rehab for the fourth time. And all the while, they are falling in love. Sharp, funny writing buoys a novel that is both entertaining and substantial. (Age 13 and older)
