for I Like This, You Like That by Linda Ashman and Eve Coy
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“‘I like rockets.’ / ‘I like trains.’ ‘I like tractors.’ / ‘I like cranes.’” Two preschool-age children, a girl who appears white and a brown-skinned child, chronicle the things they each like in a rhyming narrative that makes clear that they not only have different tastes in many things but also a solid friendship. Watercolor, crayon, and colored pencil illustrations show the two spending time together on each page spread, their statements appearing as speech bubble dialogue. One thing they realize they do agree on: pizza! They just can’t agree on who likes it more, leading to a brief negotiation over the division of four slices near story’s end. “But even when we disagree… / I like you / and you like me.” (Ages 3-5)
